Tales from Story Rock

Come along with us through the seasons with tales heard at “Show, Tell, & Ask” on Story Rock.
Story Rock is a basketball-size rock in the Sawtooth Elementary School Outdoor Classroom next to the Felted Forest. Each Story Scout child takes turns standing on it to speak about story elements he or she is making, such as character, plot, background, voice, dialogue. The Storyteller introduces a topic, then calls on three listeners who have raised their hands with questions, and answers each. Story Rock gives all Story Scouts the opportunity to experience:
  • conversational social skills by framing productive questions and answers about a defined topic
  • collegial, focused listening by having the Storyteller call on fellow Story Scouts to query the character, plot, setting or other story features
  • reflection, a solitary “turning inward” sparked by questions and answers that illuminate the author’s task
  • creative collaboration, a social “turning outward” to refine story elements through the real-time, active interest and engagement of others
  • iterative builds of dynamic story—the continual practice of re-writing and editing—in response to the dramatic possibilities Q & A exchanges reveal
  • meeting your story.
